School & Local Information

University of Georgia

When the University of Georgia was incorporated by an act of the General Assembly on  January 27, 1785, Georgia became the first state to charter a state-supported university.  In 1784 the General Assembly had set aside 40,000 acres of land to endow a college or  seminary of learning. UGA is among the top schools in three major rankings of American  universities for educational value:
 • UGA is tied for 19th in U.S. News & World Report’s 2005 list of the 50 top public  universities in America. The rankings are based on such factors as academic reputation,  student retention, faculty resources, student selectivity and financial resources.
 • U.S. News & World Report ranks UGA 6th among public universities and 41st among all  universities in its 2005 list of “Best Values” among national universities. The rankings  relate a school’s academic quality to the net cost of attending.
 • Kiplinger Magazine ranks UGA 4th on its list of the 20 best public colleges that “combine  great academics with reasonable costs.” UGA was 6th in the magazine’s previous  ranking, which is based on such factors as in-state and out-of-state costs, SAT/ACT  scores, admissions rates, graduation and retention rates, and average amount of student  debt at graduation.
 • UGA is 9th among 345 public and private colleges on the Princeton Review’s “Best  Academic Bang for your Buck” list. The rankings are based on an analysis of academic  and cost-related factors.
Because about 99 percent of in-state first-year students come to UGA on the HOPE  Scholarship, which covers tuition costs, the University was ranked by Money Magazine as  one of nine “unbeatable deals” nationwide where students can attend college tuition-free.  The magazine also listed UGA as the 6th overall best buy in the Southeast, and 27th in the  nation, among some 1,100 institutions evaluated

Music & Nightlife

By night, Athens is alive with a variety of music clubs and bars that offer entertainment suited to every taste. No visit would be complete without sampling a bit of Athens' world-renowned music scene.

The New York Times calls Athens
"Live Music Central"

and Rolling Stone Magazine named Athens the
#1 College Music Scene in America.

From a few bands that started something different (The B-52's, Pylon, REM, and Widespread Panic) and gave Athens national attention, there are now hundreds of active bands, over 10 recording studios, and several independent record labels. World-famous venues, such as the 40 Watt Club and the Georgia Theatre, continue to attract up-and-coming musical acts as well as old favorites. AthFest (www.athfest.com) in late June attracts over 120 bands that play on indoor and outdoor stages throughout the weekend. But Athens' musical heritage involves more than rock and roll; noted African-American musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Cab Calloway performed at The Morton Theatre. With jazz, classical, blues, country, and rock performances occurring on a regular basis, Athens provides one of the most diverse and affordable music scenes in the world. See a free Flagpole Magazine (published weekly) for performing artists' schedules, or visit Flagpole's website at www.flagpole.com. Another resource for the local music scene is http://www.athensmusic.net.
